Freshman Katie Bragg shattered the school record in the weight throw to highlight action for the UTSA women’s track and field team at the Texas Tech Invitational held Friday-Saturday at the Athletic Training Center.
Competing in just her second collegiate meet, the Peachtree City, Ga., native hurled the 20-pound implement out to a measure of 17.13 meters (56-2 ½) to better Natasha Ramos’ former school standard of 15.87m. Her performance earned her fourth place in the field of nine throwers won by Kelly Closse of South Plains JC (18.43m/60-5 ¾).
The Roadrunners registered 11 top-five finishes in the non-scored meet, including a “B” section victory by freshman Jessica Edwards in the long jump. The Sugar Land native leaped to a 17-10 ¾ measure for top honors.
UTSA also received a pair of runner-up showings by a pair of freshmen in the field events.
Eboni Johnson skipped to the No. 2 spot on the school’s all-timer triple jump performers list with a 39-0 ½ mark to take second behind Jessica Blair of Abilene Christian (39-3). Fellow first-year performer Zaquita McClanahan posted a 43-5 ¼ measure in the “B” section of the shot put. Freshman Stacia Newton was right behind her in third with a 42-5 ½ effort.
Freshman Brooke Townzen matched her school-record pole vault performance from last weekend in Houston, clearing 11-1 ¾ to finish in a tie for third place.
In other action, senior Dana Mecke finished fourth in the mile with a 4:59.64 clocking, while senior Pernilla Savestrand was close behind in sixth (5:04.73). Junior Aimee Jonas cleared 5-2 ½ to place fourth in the high jump, while junior Jayde James took fifth in the 1,000m (3:07.30). Junior Shavonne Armbrister was fifth in the 400m in 57.46 and senior Jessica Jones cruised to a fifth-place time of 8.09 in the 55m hurdles.
The Roadrunners return to action next Friday, Jan. 22, when they travel to the Houston Opener at Bill Yeoman Field House.
