Rockett

Michael Rockett took some time off of the diamond to talk to The Paisano about everything from Facebook to his  batting stance and bowling.   What follows is a little insight into Mr. 300.

What’s your current Facebook status?
I’m not the kind of guy who updates his facebook status every 10 minutes but if I do put something up there, its probably a Lil Wayne or Chamillionaire quote.

What’s the most frustrating/best thing about having the last name Rockett?
I would have to say the worst is when people ask me why I’m called that… like it’s a nickname or something. The best thing is that it’s easy to remember so no one forgets my name.

What is your walk out song?  What is the song you really want that you don’t use because you are embarrassed?
We don’t have the privilege of walk out songs this year because of an issue with an old teammate cough cough James Keithley cough cough. If we did get them, I would have used “I Got” by Chamillionaire. That or “Love Story” by Taylor Swift.

You’re pretty good at bowling I hear. Ever bowled a 300?
I thought I was good until I played my girlfriend; she embarrasses me every time we go. The highest I’ve ever gotten is a 195.

You’re relationship status is ‘in a relationship,’ but how many times do you get poked on Facebook?
I don’t get poked very often, but if I do it’s by some weird guy named Oscar.

Who’s the one guy on the baseball team that you have a bromance/man-crush on?
I can’t say that I have a bromance with anyone on the team. By the way I’m glad that show got taken off the air. I wanted to fight myself every time I would come across it.

Your hitting stance is very laid back. You don’t even appear as if you are ready to hit a ball. Where does that stance come from?
It came from my hitting coach freshman year. I used to be the complete opposite, being crouched real low and spread apart, but this has worked well for me. I have actually gotten yelled at by my own fans before to get ready to hit.

The baseball field is located next to Chaparral Village. Have you ever broken a window after hitting a home-run during a game or batting practice?
Last year the wind was blowing pretty hard out to left and I hit one of the third story windows in practice. Anytime that happens we all cheer like it’s some big feat, but I wouldn’t have been able to hit it that far without the wind.

What’s the most irritating thing that has been done or said to you when in the batters box?
One I will never forget was at Baylor my sophomore year. The pitcher was in his wind up about to throw when some guy in the stands yells, “take me to your leader.” I don’t really know what he meant by it but I started dying laughing in the middle of my at bat.

You’ve been in San Antonio for four years now, but you are from Sugar Land, Texas, which is right outside of Houston. Have you converted to the silver and black of the Spurs or are you still a Rockets fan?
I was born in San Antonio and lived here until I was eight so I have always been a Spurs fan. I can’t stand the Rockets or Hakeem (Olajuwon).

Your brother will be a freshman on the team next season. Have any advice for freshman duties?
I would tell him that he’s a freshman so he has to do what everyone else tells him without giving them grief. I wish some of our freshman this year would have known that coming in.

Why can’t you guys win an SLC tournament?
It’s just a matter of being hot at the right time. Unfortunately, we always seem to be cooling down about that time of year. With the way things are going for us this season, we are bound to heat up come tournament time.
