Among UTSA’s organizations, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) is an honor society for high-achieving freshmen and sophomores. There are currently 233 chapters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In order to join, members must have a GPA of 3.4 or above and rank in the top 20 percent of their class. Eligible members automatically receive an invitation and pay a one-time $75 entry fee to join.
By joining NSCS, members have access to NSCS-only scholarships, leadership training, internships, employment leads and travel opportunities. NSCS can even help you save on textbooks and car insurance.
“We stand for Integrity, Leadership, and Honor,” senior member Ashley Karr said.
UTSA’s NSCS chapter has already participated in several altruistic projects, making a difference within their community as well as around the world.
“Thus far we have participated in community service projects like Habitat for Humanity and Relay for Life,” Karr said. “We are currently taking on a new challenge of fundraising for Project H2O to help build a well in Africa.”
Karr speaks about future events in which UTSA students can participate.
“We have Integrity Week Feb. 8-12 in which members, along with many others take an oath of integrity by signing a banner that will be hung on campus,” she said.
While NSCS has only been a part of UTSA for a couple of years, the organization continues to gain new members.
“Over 700 people are a part of UTSA's NSCS Chapter,” Karr said. “We hope to keep this organization active for many years to come.”
For those who are considering joining NSCS, here is what current members have to say.
“NSCS is a great organization to join, not only does it help build your resume, you get the opportunity to apply for many scholarships, receive discounts, enhance your leadership skills, help the community and much more,” sophomore Jasmine Powell said.
Senior Jacob Boomsaad not only thinks of the current benefits but of the benefits that will help him after he graduates.
“A member of NSCS is widely recognized by prospective employers and graduate institutions as having been an integral part of an active organization founded on high academic achievement,” he said. “For those who are interested in joining, I would advise them to come to an event or make contact with the UTSA chapter to find out more about NSCS.”
