You know you’ve read about it: the irresistible gossip of all the latest celebs, the quickest way to a beach body and the best way to tell what a man is thinking. All of our favorite magazines like People, Cosmopolitan, Us Weekly and Allure always tell us exactly what we want to hear, but should we believe it?
My first thought is that they wouldn’t dare publish an article that sounded juicy but wasn’t true. Wrong. Have you seen the latest diet pill commercials? Some of those “after” pictures don’t exactly match those “before” pictures, if you know what I mean. So if false advertising is allowed, how do we know what to take seriously or not?
A recent article in “Us Weekly” had a full two page article declaring “Get a slimmer look in seconds” with only the aid of makeup and hair spray. Now ladies, make-up is a beautiful thing, but slimmer in seconds? I don’t think so. The article even says, “Keep your overall makeup palette neutral, bright shades add pounds.”
I think this should be taken to Jillian Michaels for a weigh in and see how many pounds it actually adds.
Also, “Cosmopolitan” just recently ran an article titled, “Hidden secrets his hug reveals,” by Molly Triffin. It described each kind of hug and exactly what a guy’s intention with it is. Now, there are many different kinds of people on this big planet and I haven’t experienced a hug from them all. I don’t think it’s a far stretch to say Ms. Triffin hasn’t either. So is she a psychiatrist that knows these things or just a successful journalist trying to get your attention?
Well I looked her up and surprise, she graduated with a degree in French and English and went to a graduate school for journalism. I think knowing this information would really change a readers perspective on her “beauty” articles.
Maybe after the title and author of an article, there should also be information about where the author graduated college and what makes them credible for this information. Seriously girls, I know some of you base your next date off these articles you read but maybe gossip magazines aren’t the best application for Mr. Right.
So the next magazine you pick up, make it just be for a good read or to look at all the pretty pictures not for cold hard facts.
