FOX’s newest comedy series is about to start! The show is called Sons of Tucson, and it will air March 14 at 8:30.
Now, when watching a new series, you always give it at least three episodes to see if it’s going to be worth your time to watch every week. Sometimes the producers need that much time to work out all the kinks for the show to actually be high-quality. It’s kind of like That 70’s Show, the first couple of episodes weren’t all that, but once it got into the season it turned out to be one of the funniest shows on TV.
Well, Sons of Tucson is no different. The first couple of episodes are just getting the story line together, but as it goes on, the story develops and becomes funnier.
The story is about three young kids- seven, 10 and 12- whose mother isn’t in the picture anymore and whose father just went to jail. Consequently they are basically running from child services while living on their own and trying to find a rent-a -dad.
They find Ron Snufkin who was living out of his car and working at a sporting goods store at the time. After a deliberation between the brothers, they decide he’s not too smart and would be perfect for the job. They pay him to go see the principal when needed, be their dad on career day and even go to yard sales as a family, all while giving him a room in their tool shed- they don’t trust him enough to let him sleep in the house quite yet.
Ron is a really unorderly and unsanitary man, but his childish behaviors keep the show humorous. He occasionally gets so rushed he will forget his pants. Not really roll on the floor laughing material, but a giggle at least. It’s the youngest brother who brings the humor level up a notch.
He’s in kindergarten and hates the fact that Ron is their “father.” He’s constantly mean to him and almost blows their cover at school once by yelling, “That’s not my dad!” His blunt and rude nature makes the show actually appealing.
The other two brothers aren’t too interesting. One is nerdy and really paranoid, the other is the cool guy who doesn’t really care about anything. It’s a predictable character line-up for a sitcom making the episodes rather predictable as well.
The show is supposed to be a comedy, meaning you’re suppose to laugh, but the producers didn’t polish on that as much as they should have. They tried- there was a couple of awkward scenes that were supposed to be laughed at, but failed. A middle aged, overweight man with his pants around his ankles isn’t very of funny. There were a couple parts that were made me laugh, but not enough to label this as a comedy series.
By the third episode, Ron starts to show more fatherly traits, and the boys start to trust him, which means that the characters actually have some versatility-a good sign. As the season continues, there will be some versatility in their humor as well.
Check out the new series. It will air March 14 and you can judge if it’s funny enough for you, if not, stick to That 70’s Show reruns.
