University of Texas at San Antonio officials announced Jan. 19 that Jim Bodenstedt, a graduate of UTSA’s College of Business (1996) and a local restaurant franchise owner, and  his wife, Cathy Bodenstedt, a current undergraduate, are the first to award a million-dollar donation to support the upcoming UTSA football program.

UTSA museum now Smithsonian affiliate

On Jan. 28, the Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) in downtown San Antonio became an associate of the Smithsonian Institute of Washington, DC.  Present at the signing ceremony were ITC Executive Director Timothy Gette and UTSA President Ricardo Romo, as well as Smithsonian representative Harold Closter, director of the Smithsonian Affiliations program.

Second chance given to dropouts

University against stop-backs

Welcome Back, the newest program created by the Graduation Initiative team aims to facilitate the return of students who left UTSA before graduation. 
The program, established in Fall 2006, has a record of approximately 3,000 students who attended UTSA from 1989 to spring 2009, and have abandoned their undergraduate studies.

New Main Campus building?

A new “tilt-up” concrete building is being proposed for construction on the UTSA main campus. 
The process behind its construction involves raising precast concrete panels and connecting them using a steel frame.

The UTSA men’s tennis team opened up their 2010 season with a 7-0 sweep of Prairie View A&M on Saturday, and  a 6-1 win against Laredo Community College on Sunday at the UTSA Tennis Center.

Men and Women excel at Houston Invitational/Mutis

Women’s
Senior Dana Mecke won the mile and posted a runner-up showing in the 800 meters to lead a solid effort by the UTSA women’s track & field team at the Houston Invitational/Multis held Friday-Saturday at Bill Yeoman Field House.

Senior All-American Teddy Williams improved his ranking on the NCAA’s 60-meter dash leaderboard to highlight the UTSA men’s track & field team’s two days of action at this weekend’s Houston Invitational/Multis.

60’s inspired musical is socially responsible and entertaining

The San Pedro Playhouse became a time machine over these past two weeks, a musical time machine that is. Beehive the 60’s Musical took audience members back with some of the 1960’s greatest performers: Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Leslie Gore, Connie Francis, Dusty Springfield, Petual Clark and many more.

Dance company mixes Chinese culture with modern dance

      The Na-Ni Chen Dance Company put on a one-of-a-kind performance Jan. 30 at the Carver Community Cultural Center.
      Dancers combined contemporary dance with a mix of Asian art and martial arts. They used grace, flexibility and sheer talent to tell a story through each song. Only the beat of the music and sounds of their props filled the auditorium, which allowed the audience to focus entirely on the dancing.
